ReelShort TV Guide Daily New Drops

Stage One: Often, the Story Exists Before the Script

The decision about which story is worth the gamble has already been made before anyone calls “action” on a short drama set. Track a few hits backward and you often come across a book at the start of the chain. The novel Shutout by Jami Davenport is the source for ReelShort’s Breaking the Ice, a 2024 hockey romance built around a secret child. Bound by Honor, a mafia arranged-marriage series that ReelShort released on November 1, 2025, is adapted from a novel by Cora Reilly. The Korean office romance Quiet reelshorts.org/where-to-watch/my-husband-pretended-to-be-poor in the Office!, from 2026 and carrying a 19+ age rating, is based on a web novel and webtoon. Source material sits close at hand because several app owners also operate reading businesses: Holywater runs the books app My Passion, Crazy Maple Studio produces the interactive-story app Chapters, and GoodShort’s Google Play developer name is GoodNovel. Writers turn to proven tropes such as billionaire romance, revenge, identity reveals and family drama where no book exists. Every scene has to serve up a reveal, a reversal or a threat within seconds, so the script’s job is to squeeze a long drama story into such scenes.

Stage Two: Casting Faces Viewers Know

The format’s economics show up on screen at the casting stage. On IMDb, the cast lists for short series keep featuring the same names. ReelShort’s werewolf romance Fated to the Alpha was fronted by Noah Fearnley in 2024 and he came back in 2025 for Love on the Sidelines, a second-chance story about a former football star. Rosa Singerman headlined both Blood and Bones of the Disowned Daughter and Kidnapped by the Mafia on GoodShort in 2025, starring opposite Franky Cammarata in the second. A lead with a following on one app reaches the next title with a head start, which makes a real difference when a series has only a handful of free episodes to win you over. Studios also cast with a specific viewer in mind: TheWrap reported in October 2024 that about 75 percent of ReelShort’s users were women. In Los Angeles, DramaBox has a production team.

Stage Three: Seventy Episodes in About Eight Days

Per TheWrap, a Western short drama is typically shot in eight to ten days at a cost of $150,000 to $300,000 per series. A similar picture comes from Wikipedia’s overview of the format, which puts a seven- to ten-day shoot at $150,000 to $250,000 for 50 to 70 or more episodes. Simple arithmetic shows that, shooting a 70-episode series in eight days means filming close to nine episodes’ worth of material every working day. Chinese producers that sell overseas have reported leaner numbers still. Jiuzhou Culture placed a 70-episode series at $100,000 to $150,000 in China Daily reporting from January 2024. On a per-episode basis, that works out to roughly $1,400 to $2,100 for each finished episode. According to Jiuzhou, about 80 percent of the more than 600 titles it had made for overseas markets were dubbed Chinese adaptations and 20 percent were original overseas productions. The costly shoot happens only once, since dubbing lets a studio reuse a finished domestic series.

Stage Four: Cutting Episodes to 60–100 Seconds

In the editing room, episodes of 60 to 100 seconds are cut from the footage and framed vertically at 9:16 for a phone. With room for a turn or two of plot at that length, each episode is built around a question the next episode promises to answer. The house style is the cliffhanger: the mechanism that moves you from one episode to the next. Taken together, the segments of a 70-episode series add up to roughly 70 to 117 minutes of screen time. Episode counts vary a great deal by title, and GoodShort’s official pages list 30 episodes for My Stolen Crown: I Am the Dragon Queen and 100 for The Dragon King’s Return. Viewers who never open the app can still watch the same footage, since ReelShort also runs official channels on YouTube, TikTok and Dailymotion. In other words, editors are trimming video dramas for several screens at once.

Stage Five: Choosing Where the Paywall Falls

The final creative decision is commercial too. Per TheWrap, the standard model makes the first eight to ten episodes free. ReelShort’s own blog sets its free run at usually five to 15 episodes, and TheWrap counted the first eight in 2024. Once the free run ends, coins unlock the episodes, with a standard cost of about 60 coins per episode according to ReelShort’s blog. You can also buy a weekly VIP pass that costs about $19.99 in the US App Store as of September 2026 and auto-renews, or earn coins by watching ads, with one ad unlocking two premium episodes according to the same blog. Country, platform and promotion all affect prices, so the store you use may show something different. Paywalls landing right on a cliffhanger rank among the most common complaints about these apps, along with auto-renewing weekly passes and rising coin costs, which is why placement is the controversial part. Coin generators and modded “unlimited coins” apps promising a way around the wall are unofficial and best left alone.

Stage Six: AI-Generated Series and Animation

The latest stage of production removes the camera altogether. Next to its live-action library, ReelShort now streams animated motion comics. Arthur Lancaster, the protagonist of the 58-episode family saga The Lost Heir, loses his memory saving his brother, grows up on a farm as “Johnny” and in the end exposes the foster sister who repeatedly framed him. A 52-episode ReelShort title from 2026, Shattered Vows is an AI-generated animated motion comic with no cast listed; it follows heiress Vanessa Windsor seeking revenge on the husband and best friend who helped her sister’s killer escape. A separate 58-episode ShortMax series carries the same name, but it should not be confused with this one. More than 80 percent of DramaWave’s newly released content is AI-generated, according to 36Kr, which means the app has gone the furthest; 36Kr also reported that its annualized revenue exceeded $700 million by the second quarter of 2026. Fruit Love Island, an AI-made parody of Love Island starring fruit contestants, showed on TikTok in March 2026 that AI video dramas have spread beyond the apps too, before critics widely labeled it “AI slop”.

Stage Seven: A Hollywood Studio Joins the Line

Established studios have noticed; Fox Entertainment is the plainest example. Fox became a shareholder in Holywater, the Kyiv-founded company behind the My Drama app, by taking an equity stake in October 2025. Fox also pledged to produce more than 200 vertical titles over two years. Fox-produced series already on the app include Billionaire Blackmail, Bound by Obsession and My Heart’s Offside. Holywater secured a further $22 million in January 2026 in a round led by Horizon Capital, and My Drama took the 2025 Webby Award for Best Streaming Service. When a network-scale producer commits to that volume, it suggests the eight-day shoot has gone from curiosity to line item.

The Production Line at a Glance

Place the stages side by side and the logic of the business becomes clear. The fixed, expensive block is the shoot, and much of the rest is built around it. Casting leans on familiar faces, scripts tend to arrive pre-tested as novels or familiar tropes, and the edit is engineered around cliffhangers that feed a paywall. While fans who search for a “reel short drama” usually have ReelShort titles in mind, TheWrap and Wikipedia describe broadly similar methods across the category. Typical time and cost at each stage are summed up in the table below, which uses only publicly reported figures. Instead of guessing, it says so where no reliable number has been published.

Stage of production Typical time / cost What happens
Source material and script No public figure A novel, web fiction or a proven trope gets adapted; Breaking the Ice adapts Shutout, and Bound by Honor adapts Cora Reilly’s novel
The casting stage No published figure Leads are cast, often actors who already have short-drama credits; animated titles skip this stage
Filming 7–10 days; $150K–250K (Wikipedia) or $150K–300K per series (TheWrap); $100K–150K per 70 episodes (Jiuzhou) 50 to 70+ episodes are filmed in a vertical frame
Edit Episodes lasting 60–100 seconds The footage is sliced into installments that each end on a cliffhanger
Release and paywall The first 8–10 episodes free (TheWrap); on ReelShort, about 60 coins per later episode Viewers unlock episodes with coins, ads or a weekly pass of about $19.99 in the US App Store as of September 2026
AI and animated series Costs undisclosed Motion comics including The Lost Heir and Shattered Vows; over 80 percent of DramaWave’s new releases made with AI
Studio co-production 200+ titles over two years (Fox for My Drama) Vertical series for an app are produced by an established studio
